Originaire de l’Ontario, Ben Wilkins déménage à Montréal à l’âge de dix-huit ans pour y étudier la musique. Déjà habile à la guitare et au piano, c'est à l’Université McGill qu’il perfectionne son art. Puisqu'il lui faut choisir un instrument, il s'inscrit en interprétation de la trompette classique. Ben passe la majorité de son temps libre à amasser tout ce qu’il peut en matière de composition, de théorie et d’harmonie jazz, de techniques d’arrangements et de chant. L'institution prônant la musique contemporaine et moderne pour la composition, Ben se rapproche des étudiants en Jazz et travaille à sa propre musique. «Je faisais des compositions un peu en secret, pour moi-même. Je suis allé chercher ce dont j’avais besoin à McGill et j’ai fait ma propre école, mon propre programme», avoue-t-il.
Après avoir décroché son diplôme, Wilkins obtient une bourse pour étudier le mandarin, ce qui lui permet de passer près d’un an au Conservatoire de musique de Shanghai ainsi qu’à l’Université des langues et des cultures de Beijing. Un an plus tard, de retour à Montréal, il prend place sur les planches, offrant des prestations dans divers bars de la métropole. Il donne également plusieurs spectacles dans le nord-est américain.
Une rencontre déterminante se fait l’année suivante lorsque Pascal Shefteshy croise son chemin. Cet ex-confrère de McGill s’est forgé en quelques années toute une réputation d’ingénieur de son et de réalisateur chevronné. En effet, en tant qu’assistant du fameux réalisateur Pierre Marchand (Sarah McLachlan, Rufus Wainwright, etc.), Shefteshy a collaboré à la production d’albums de grosses pointures de la musique. Il propose à Wilkins d’immortaliser ses chansons.
Au moment où le budget de production s'essouffle, Pierre Marchand annonce qu’il s’exile trois mois en Inde. Laissant la porte du studio ouverte, il donne la chance à Ben Wilkins de co-produire avec Pascal Shefteshy un album à son goût, un son étudié et travaillé, et ce sans aucune contrainte.
Dans la même année, Wilkins répond à l’appel de James Di Salvio, qui lui confie l’écriture des arrangements de cordes et de cuivres pour The Garden, quatrième album du groupe Bran Van 3000. On l’entend aussi chanter la piste vocale principale de la chanson This Day.
En février 2011, le premier extrait radio de Ben Wilkins, «Back Of My Head», se retrouve au Palmarès BDS Top 50 très rapidement et y reste pendant plus de vingt semaines. Il tourne ensuite un vidéoclip pour la chanson «Through To You», envoyée en radio récemment.
L'agence canadienne de spectacles SL Feldman décide de prendre Ben sous son aile croyant énormément en son talent. Avec son album éponyme qui sortira en octobre 2011, sous étiquette Milagro Records, et plusieurs dates déjà arrêtées au calendrier, Ben Wilkins ne pourra que vous surprendre.

Ben Wilkins Biography
Born and raised in Ontario, Ben Wilkins moved to Montreal, Quebec, at the age of eighteen to study music at McGill University. He majored in Classical Trumpet, which he played poorly, nearly flunking his performance exams. But he soaked up whatever he could regarding composition, arranging, singing, theory and jazz harmony – spending countless nights sneaking into the piano studios afterhours to write songs.
Upon graduation, Wilkins received a scholarship to study Mandarin in China, and spent the better part of a year at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and the Beijing Language and Culture University. In 2008, he returned to Montreal to perform locally and at colleges and clubs in the north-eastern U.S.
Later on, he was approached by Pascal Shefteshy, an acclaimed engineer and producer working for famous producer Pierre Marchand (Sarah McLachlan, Rufus Wainwright) to record an album. They got to work, and then just as their limited budget was running out, Marchand announced that he was going to India for three months, leaving the door to his studio open and Wilkins and Shefteshy in the position to record an album without compromise.
Aside from working on his own album, Wilkins has not sat idle: he answered James Di Salvio’s call, who entrusted him with writing the string and brass arrangements on The Garden, Bran Van 3000’s fourth album. Ben can also be heard singing the lead vocals on the song entitled This Day.
In February 2011, Ben’s first song from his upcoming album, "Back Of My Head" reached BDS Top 50 position after only a few weeks of tracking and stayed on the Charts for over twenty weeks. The second single, "Trough To You" was launched on radio in mid-August and the video of the song has been sent to Musique Plus and Much Music.
Although Ben’s album won’t be found in stores before late October, the largest booking agency in Canada, SL Feldman, who claims that Ben will be the “next big thing”, decided to embark full force in this adventure. Several shows have already been booked and confirmed at this time.
