Tributes to Kate McGarrigle

On August 7 and 8, three events have been organized as tributes to Kate McGarrigle.

INAUGURATION OF PLACE KATE-MCGARRIGLE
The borough of Outremont, where Kate McGarrigle lived, has redesigned and enhanced an area of Laurier Avenue as a tribute to the late folksinger. A public work of art in her memory, called Kate & Nora, will adorn the space. This piece, designed by multidisciplinary American artist Robert Wilson, was donated to the City of Montreal by Rufus Wainwright, Kate McGarrigle’s son, on behalf of the family.

On August 7, starting at 1:30 pm, Marie Cinq-Mars, mayor of Outremont, as well as Élaine Ayotte, member of Montreal’s executive committee responsible for culture, heritage and design, will join the Wainwright-McGarrigle clan for the official inauguration, occurring in the presence of the media. Rufus and Martha will be available on-site to answer questions. It most certainly will be a highly emotional moment as homage is paid to this wonderful woman.

SCREENING OF THE FILM SING ME THE SONGS THAT SAY I LOVE YOU
The documentary Sing Me the Songs That Say I Love You: A Concert for Kate McGarrigle will make its Canadian premiere at the Théâtre Outremont at 7:00 pm, after the inauguration of Place Kate-McGarrigle.

The film will be presented by renowned filmmaker Wim Wenders and by Rufus Wainwright.

Part of the official selection of the Berlin and Sydney festivals last year and directed by Lian Lunson (Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man), Sing Me the Songs That Say I Love You documents the musical tribute performed in memory of Kate McGarrigle at New York’s Town Hall Theatre in 2011. The documentary features an impressive cast of artists, including Rufus and Martha Wainwright, Emmylou Harris, Justin Vivian Bond, Antony Hegarty, Krystle Warren, Norah Jones, Teddy Thompson and writer Michael Ondaatje.

CHEMINANT VERS MA VILLE BENEFIT CONCERT
As part of the Jazz All-Year Round series of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, Martha and Rufus Wainwright, as well as Anna McGarrigle, will share the stage with Pierre Lapointe, Robert Charlebois, Michel Rivard, Marie Michèle Desrosiers and Fanny Bloom for two presentations of the concert Cheminant vers ma ville.

The evening’s profits will be given to the Kate McGarrigle Foundation, administered by the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). Each year, the MUHC gives research grants to scientists who are working to fight against sarcoma, the cancer that took Kate’s life in 2010.
