New Ways de Leif Vollebekk est disponible aujourd’hui via Secret City Records. C’est le son du désir dans son déploiement. Cette semaine, Leif Vollebekk a également partagé une version live de Transatlantic Flight, filmée au Roy Thomson Hall de Toronto avec une section de cordes de 10 musiciens. Vollebekk y joue sur le célèbre piano Yamaha de Glenn Gould.

Je m’imaginais toujours jouer ce {transatlantic flight} en concert et être entouré d’instruments à cordes. Des violoncelles, des violons, des altos, des contrebasses... et un grand piano, comme le mât au milieu de ce gros navire en bois rempli de musiciens. J’ai demandé à ma gérante si elle croyait que c’était possible. Le lendemain, elle m’a dit que le Massey Hall aimerait faire exactement cela. De plus, j’allais pouvoir jouer sur le piano de Glenn Gould. Pour tout ça, et plus encore, je suis éternellement reconnaissant envers eux. - Leif Vollebekk

L’enregistrement est une gracieuseté de la corporation du Massey Hall et du Roy Thomson Hall et fait parti de la série VARIATIONS du Roy Thomson Hall.

New Ways a été enregistré au Studio Capitol à Los Angeles et au Studio Breakglass à Montréal. L’album présente Olivier Fairfield (Timber Timbre) et Homer Steinweiss (The Dap-Kings, Amy Winehouse, Mark Ronson) à la batterie, avec des voix additionnelles de Angie McMahon. Il a été mixé par Chris Allen à NYC (Yoko Ono, Fleet Foxes, Sigur Rós, Margaret Glaspy). Le matriçage a été effectué par Greg Calbi au Sterling Sound (David Byrne, The War On Drugs, Gregory Alan Isakov, Tame Impala, Father John Misty, Bob Dylan, Patrick Watson). 

Twin Solitude est un album qui a tout changé pour Leif, il s’est retrouvé sur la courte liste du Prix de musique Polaris en 2017 et a reçu une nomination au Juno Awards, tout en cumulant plus de 23 millions d’écoutes en continu à ce jour. Il a été acclamé par la critique, notamment par : le Uncut, NPR Music, The Fader, The Sunday Times Culture, The Line of Best Fit, Paste, Brooklyn Vegan, WXPN, KCRW et le Exclaim! pour ne nommer que ceux-ci. Durant sa carrière, Leif a partagé la scène avec Shakey Graves, Gregory Alan Isakov, Angie McMahon, Daniel Lanois, Patrick Watson, Natalia Lafourcade, Mandolin Orange, Beth Orton, Sinéad O’Connor et plusieurs autres. La majorité des concerts de sa dernière tournée nord-américaine pour supporter Twin Solitude ont affiché complet.

Leif Vollebekk’s New Ways is out today via Secret City Records. It is the sound of desire in its unfolding. A sonic documentation of everything that Leif felt; tenderness and violence, sex and rebirth. Anything that I wouldn't ever want to tell anyone, I just put it on the record, he says. Uncut already gave it an 8/10 stating Leif Vollebekk's synesthesia is working overtime...the unhurried observational vividness of extended takes in a Linklater film.  A self-described ‘recovering Dylanphile,’ Vollebekk relapses on the knotty Blood Brother and the panoramic Apalachee Plain, the bittersweet lilt of his voice all tangled up in blue, while Rolling Stone France called it his most elegant album yet. The headlining tour is beginning to see sold-out dates in Toronto and Montreal, but before them Leif will visit Europe while supporting Half Moon Run for the entire month of November.

Leif also shared this week a live version of Transatlantic Flight, filmed at the Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto with a 10-piece string section. Vollebekk performed on the famous Glenn Gould Yamaha piano.

I kept picturing playing this {transatlantic flight} live and being surrounded by string instruments. Cellos, violins, violas, double basses... and a grand piano being like a mast in the middle of this big wooden ship of musicians. I asked my manager if she thought something like that could ever happen. The next day she told me Massey Hall would love to do exactly that. And further, I would get to play their Glenn Gould piano. Released last June, the first single Hot Tears was featured on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic Top 10 for a number of weeks and was recently featured as a KCRW Today's Top Tune. The song quickly reached well over two million streams. Leif performed a Free At Noon concert over at WXPN last week and was in the CBC studio yesterday The NY Times recently said that Leif’s songs are pensive and restless, blossoming with stream-of-consciousness verses that bear the marks of long nights spent alone on the road.
