Island, le plus récent album de l’auteur-compositeur nommé aux Oscars Owen Pallett, est disponible dès aujourd’hui, le 22 mai 2020. L’album est disponible sur toutes les plateformes en ligne. Une parution vinyle suivra plus tard en 2020, et des dates de tournée sont prévues en 2021.

Conçu et tourné durant la pandémie, le vidéoclip de A Bloody Morning a été réalisé par Vincent René-Lortie et la chorégraphe Brittney Canda. Les danseurs — âgés de 6 à 72 ans — ont été filmés sans contact physique, entièrement à travers des fenêtres et des portes, notamment dans un établissement de soins en confinement strict.

Honnêtement, je n’ai d’abord pas été convaincu par le concept, admet Pallett. Je craignais que le vidéoclip soit de la pornographie de quarantaine, alors j’ai refusé. Succombant à l’enthousiasme du réalisateur, Owen a éventuellement accepté d’aller de l’avant.

Après avoir vu la version presque finale, J’ai été renversé, confie Owen. Je ne pouvais pas croire à quel point il était cathartique de voir ce vidéoclip, qui cadre parfaitement avec la chanson, et à quel point il était significatif et nécessaire pour moi de le regarder quand je l’ai fait.

Presque entièrement acoustique, Island commence avec 13 accords sombres, enregistrés aux studios Abbey Road avec l’Orchestre contemporain de Londres. C’est le son d’un éveil, seul, sur un nouveau rivage. Ce qui suit est scintillant et luxuriant : un album orchestral qui puise dans toute l’étendue de la discographie de Pallett, du splendide Technicolor de Heartland à l’étincelante guitare grattée à la main qui caractérisait les premiers disques de Pallett avec le trio Les Mouches.

Island regroupe des chansons sur le fait d’être vivant, en se demandant pourquoi on l’est, considérant toutes les horreurs de l’existence. Elles n’offrent pas de réponse. Je ne sais pas ce qui va arriver ensuite, avertit Pallett.

Pour la première fois, Pallett — qui a suivi une formation classique — a créé un album sans se soucier de la façon qu’il pourrait être joué sur scène. Ce ne fut pas une transition évidente, car Pallett a initialement fait sa réputation en grande partie grâce à sa virtuosité scénique, jouant du violon pour des groupes tels que Arcade Fire et Hidden Cameras, puis émergeant en tant qu’artiste solo maniant le solo et les pédales de loop sous le nom Final Fantasy. Sa deuxième parution, He Poos Clouds (2006), a remporté le tout premier Prix de musique Polaris.

En plus de son travail avec Arcade Fire, qui a été récompensé aux prix Grammy, Pallett a récemment fait des arrangements de cordes, de cuivres et d’orchestre pour Frank Ocean, Caribou, The Last Shadow Puppets, The National, Christine and the Queens, R.E.M., Linkin Park, Sigur Rós, Taylor Swift et Pet Shop Boys. Depuis le lancement de In Conflict (2014), Pallett a obtenu une nomination aux Oscars pour son travail sur Her de Spike Jonze, ainsi qu’un Emmy pour Fourteen Actors Acting de Sølve Sundsbø. Sa musique pour Spaceship Earth de Matt Wolf, un documentaire à propos d’un équipage qui a passé deux ans confiné dans une réplique de l’écosystème terrestre baptisé BIOSPHÈRE 2, est disponible dès maintenant.

Island, the latest album from Oscar-nominated composer and songwriter Owen Pallett, is out today, May 22, 2020. The album is available everywhere digitally with a vinyl release later in 2020, and tour dates in 2021 to follow.

Conceived and directed during the pandemic, the video for A Bloody Morning was directed by Vincent René-Lortie and choreographer Brittney Canda. The dancers—ranging in age from 6 to 72—were filmed with no physical contact, entirely through windows and doorways, including a care facility on strict lockdown.

Honestly, at first I wasn’t sold on the concept, says Pallett. I worried that the video would end up pornographing the quarantine, and I declined. Convinced by the director’s enthusiasm, Owen moved forward.

After seeing the near-final cut, I was floored, Owen says. I couldn’t believe how cathartic it was to see the video, how perfectly it fit the song, and how meaningful and necessary it was for me to see it when I did.

Almost entirely acoustic, Island begins with 13 darkened chords, and was recorded live at Abbey Road Studios with the London Contemporary Orchestra. The introduction is sound of waking up——alone, and on the shore of a strange land. What follows is a shimmering and luscious orchestral album that draws across the full breadth of Pallett’s discography, from Heartland’s Technicolor to the glittering, fingerpicked guitar that marked Pallett’s first records with their trio, Les Mouches.

Island is about being alive, asking why, and all the most hideous stuff of life. The songs don't divulge the answers. I don't know what's happening next, guys, Pallett warns.

For the first time, Pallett——who has a lifetime of classical training——created an album without brooding over the way it might be performed on stage. This wasn’t easy: Pallett’s initial reputation was founded on their live virtuosity, playing violin for groups including Arcade Fire and the Hidden Cameras, and a solo fiddle and loop-pedal act, under the name Final Fantasy. Pallett’s second release as Final Fantasy, 2006’s He Poos Clouds, was awarded the inaugural Polaris Music Prize.

In addition to Pallett’s Grammy award-winning work with Arcade Fire, Pallett’s commissions have included string, brass and orchestral arrangements for Frank Ocean, Caribou, The Last Shadow Puppets, The National, Christine and the Queens, R.E.M., Linkin Park, Sigur Rós, Taylor Swift and Pet Shop Boys. Since the release of In Conflict (2014), Pallett has earned an Oscar nomination for their film scoring work on Spike Jonze’s Her, and an Emmy for Sølve Sundsbø’s Fourteen Actors Acting. Their score for Matt Wolf’s Spaceship Earth, a documentary about a crew who spent two years quarantined inside a replica of Earth’s ecosystem called BIOSPHERE 2, is out now.
