Le groupe Plants and Animals lance aujourd’hui un nouveau vidéoclip pour The Jungle, la chanson titre de son cinquième album studio encensé par la critique, qui est disponible dès maintenant via Secret City Records.

Cette chanson est née des cendres d’une autre que nous avions enregistrée pour le disque précédent, mais qui avait finalement été écartée. Nic, qui était l’instigateur de la chanson au départ, voulait sauver quelques éléments et les retravailler — les changements d’accord et les « yeah yeah yeahs » au moins, qui sont inspirés par Jorge Ben et l’amour éternel que le groupe porte pour la musique brésilienne.

Le vidéoclip animé a été réalisé par Yann-Manuel Hernandez, qui a également réalisé les clips de Le Queens et Love That Boy.

The Jungle démarre avec une batterie électronique qui sonne comme des insectes la nuit. Tout un univers prend vie dans les ténèbres. C’est beau, complexe et déstabilisant. Systématique et chaotique. Juste de l’instinct, sans plan. Chaque chanson est un tel paysage. Voici des expériences personnelles vécues dans un monde instable, des expériences qui nous renvoient ce monde directement au visage, même par accident. Il y a une chanson que Nic chante à son fils adolescent rendu anxieux par les changements climatiques et le passage à une indépendance inexplorée. Le groupe transporte le tout doucement ensemble jusqu’au bleu de l’horizon. Warren a écrit les paroles d’une autre pièce peu après avoir perdu son père. Le thème est que les choses dont on hérite ne sont pas nécessairement les choses qu’on désire. De façon plus générale, c’est la situation dans laquelle se retrouvent beaucoup de gens en ce moment.

Plants and Animals est un emblématique trio montréalais qui a commencé à jouer ensemble à un jeune âge, puis qui a conquis la scène internationale en 2008 avec Parc Avenue, se bâtissant un bassin d’admirateurs diversifié grâce à ses disques autoproduits et ses intenses concerts. Parc Avenue a été encensé par la critique (Pitchfork 8/10) lorsqu’il a été lancé, en plein durant le moment musical où Montréal était considéré comme le nouveau Seattle. Today, Plants and Animals are releasing a new music video for the title song The Jungle, off their critically acclaimed fifth studio album out now on Secret City Records.

The band shares the story behind the song:

This song grew out of the ashes of one that we had recorded for the previous record but didn’t ultimately make the cut. Nic, who had sparked the song in the first place way back when, wanted to try to salvage some of the parts and give it another shot—the chord changes and the “yeah yeah yeahs” at least, which were inspired by Jorge Ben and the band’s eternal love for Brazilian music.

The animated video was directed by Yann-Manuel Hernandez, who also directed the Le Queens and Love That Boy music videos.

The Jungle starts with electronic drums that sound like insects at night. A whole universe comes alive in the dark. It’s beautiful, complex and unsettling. Systematic and chaotic. All instinct, no plan. Every song is such a landscape. They are personal experiences made in a volatile world, and they reflect that world right back at us, even by accident. There’s one song Nic sings to his teenage son who was dealing with climate change anxiety and drifting into uncharted independence. The band carries it out slowly together into a sweet blue horizon. Warren wrote the words to another shortly after losing his father. It’s about the things we inherit not necessarily being the things we want. In a broader sense, that’s where a lot of people find themselves right now.

Plants and Animals is an iconic Montreal-based trio that began playing together as kids and emerged on the international scene in 2008 with Parc Avenue.
