Secret City Records annonce avec bonheur que Bibi Club se joint à sa très chère famille d’artistes. Pour célébrer cette nouvelle collaboration, le duo montréalais formé d’Adèle Trottier-Rivard et Nicolas Basque partage aujourd’hui une toute nouvelle chanson intitulée Femme-Lady. Pour exprimer un sentiment de force féminine et de convivialité, Adèle a demandé à sa sœur, Joséphine Trottier-Rivard, et à sa mère, Marie-Christine Trottier, de chanter les harmonies de voix avec elle. Le titre vient d'un chandelier en forme d'ananas que la matriarche a offert à Joséphine. Elles l’ont rebaptisé Femme-Lady, un groupe qui rit ensemble et fonce vers la lumière sans se retourner.

Le vidéoclip qui accompagne la chanson est une réalisation de Léa Taillefer et met en scène le groupe ainsi que les femmes Trottier-Rivard sur fond d’images tournées à Tahiti. La chanson, tout comme le vidéoclip, interpelle les beaux jours, la chaleur et la lumière.

Le duo se produira en concert à Paris dans le cadre des Inrocks Superclub à la Boule Noire le 3 mai prochain.

Le canevas de cette chanson est né lors d'une soirée d'improvisation à Montréal organisée par Nico, en duo avec Erika Angell, la veille de la fermeture des salles de spectacle en début de pandémie. Une soirée un peu hors temps, un dernier concert où, entre ami.es, on se disait au revoir sans savoir quand nous allions pouvoir nous retrouver. Nico avait nommé cette soirée Hope. En studio, Adèle et Nico ont retravaillé la chanson en gardant en tête ce côté dansant qui avance, presque krautrock, mais en y intégrant une tension créée par des drones de synthés qui se glissent entre les accords, s'inspirant du sentiment de flottement que l'on retrouve dans la musique d'Alice Coltrane. La chanson exprime ce besoin de prendre soin les uns des autres, de transmettre une magie honnête et bienveillante, et de chérir la lumière et la nature qui nous entourent, malgré les moments sombres. - BiBi Club

Forts de leur expérience au sein de différentes formations musicales, Adèle Trottier-Rivard et Nicolas Basque forment un duo depuis 2016, sous le nom de Bibi Club. Depuis ses débuts, le groupe assume un minimalisme, non pas dans ses choix esthétiques, mais plutôt dans une approche créative qui évite de trafiquer les sons au profit d’une énergie musicale brute. La sortie de leur premier EP en 2019 a particulièrement mis de l’avant une exploration sonore radicale qui souligne ce désir d’exister singulièrement. À travers quatre morceaux audacieux, les compositions d’Adèle et de Nicolas ont dès lors tracé les contours d’un langage musical ancré dans une quête d’authenticité.

Depuis, Bibi Club caresse le fantasme d’encapsuler plusieurs espaces-temps dans sa musique. Autrement dit, le groupe explore un son unique à la scène montréalaise, empruntant autant à des groupes new-yorkais post-punk des années 1970 (tels que Arthur Russell, Talking Heads et Suicide) qu'au jazz spirituel de la West Coast d’Alice Coltrane, ainsi qu’à certaines formations pop expérimentales de l’Angleterre actuelle (comme Tirzah et Dean Blunt). S’il faut les définir, les compositions de Bibi Club évoquent un électro-pop-rock qui met de l’avant voix, guitares, synthétiseurs et drum machine; l’influence de mouvements plus radicaux est certaine, mais l’essence du groupe reconduit douceur et familiarité, d’où l’idée de leur fameux living room party music.

Secret City Records is thrilled to announce that Bibi Club is joining its dear family of artists. To celebrate this new collaboration, the Montreal duo formed by Adèle Trottier-Rivard and Nicolas Basque shares a brand new song today, entitled Femme-Lady. To convey a feeling of female empowerment, Adèle asked her sister, Joséphine Trottier-Rivard, and her mother, Marie-Christine Trottier, to perform the vocal harmonies with her. The title comes from a pineapple-shaped chandelier that Adèle’s mom gave to Joséphine, which they renamed Femme-Lady. It’s about laughing together and rushing into the light without looking back.

Directed by Léa Taillefer, the music video for the song shows the band and the Trottier-Rivard women against a backdrop of footage shot in Tahiti. Both the song and the video convey warm, bright, sunny days.

The duo will perform in Paris during the Inrocks Superclub at La Boule Noire on May 3.

The bones of this song were created during an improv night organized in Montreal by Nico and Erika Angell, the night before venues closed down at the start of the pandemic. That evening felt out of time, one last event between friends, saying goodbye without knowing when we would meet again. Nico called the night, ‘Hope.’ In the studio, Adèle and Nico worked on the song while keeping in mind its groovy, propulsive vibe, almost krautrock, but increasing the tension by adding synth drones between the chords, like in the music of Alice Coltrane. The song is about the need to take care of each other, to share honest magic, to cherish the light and the nature surrounding us, even on dark days. - BiBi Club

Building on their experience as members of various bands, Adèle Trottier-Rivard and Nicolas Basque formed a duo in 2016, adopting the name Bibi Club. Since the get-go, the band has embraced minimalism, not so much in their aesthetic choices, as in a desire to avoid transforming sounds too much, preferring to focus on raw musical power. Their 2019 debut EP showcased radical sonic exploration. Across four bold tracks, Adèle and Nicolas immediately established a musical language rooted in authenticity and individuality.

Bibi Club has been attempting to push back space-time boundaries in their music ever since. Their sound is unique on the Montreal scene, borrowing from 70s post-punk New York bands (e.g. Arthur Russell, Talking Heads, Suicide), the West Coast spiritual jazz of Alice Coltrane, as well as the current experimental pop scene in England (e.g. Tirzah, Dean Blunt). Bibi Club’s compositions can be described as electro-pop rock focusing on vocals, guitars, synths and drum machines. The influence of radical movements is undeniable, but at its core, the band conveys a cozy, cheerful feeling, in the spirit of their famous living-room party music.
