BIBI CLUB ANNOUNCE THEIR MONTREAL HOMECOMING CONCERT NOVEMBER 30 AT LA SALA ROSSA
LE SOLEIL ET LA MER ON THE LONG LIST OF THE 2023 POLARIS MUSIC PRIZE
AMONG THE THREE FINALISTS FOR THE PRIX ESPOIR FEQ
After being crowned Best Newcomers of 2023 during the last edition of GAMIQ in November, Montreal duo Bibi Club are thrilled to be among the three finalists of the Prix espoir FEQ, in addition to seeing Le soleil et la mer appear on the prestigious Long List of the 2023 Polaris Music Prize.
Following an electrifying free concert at Les Francos de Montréal last week, Bibi Club continue their festival tour. They will perform at La Noce, at the FEQ, at Le Festif! de Baie St-Paul, at Hillside, and at Up Here Festival. They will also open for the eagerly awaited return of Blonde Redhead in London on July 20. The duo is also announcing their Montreal homecoming concert, which will conclude the cycle of this debut album on November 30 at La Sala Rossa, along with two concerts in Gatineau and Quebec City this fall.
Le soleil et la mer has been widely praised since its release last August. The album was among the best Quebec albums of 2022 according to Le Devoir, the song Femme-Lady was the #1 best song of 2022 in Cult MTL and among the Top Songs of the Year of the prestigious blog Said the gramophone—Bibi Club remains a well-kept secret in our province. Yet in France, the duo has been making waves since the release of its debut. Following praise from Les Inrocks, Magic Magazine and Libération, as well as an add to the official playlist of France Inter upon the release of the album last August, the band was included in the Top Albums of the Year of Les Inrocks and the 10 Newcomers of the Year of Magazine Tsugi. Bibi Club stopped by France Inter for a performance at Côté Club during their latest tour in December, and they recorded a video with the renowned Blogothèque. They were also interviewed by Radio Nova, they appeared on FIP, and several of their concerts were a smash hit! Following their performance at The Great Escape Festival in the UK, BBC6 Music has supported the band by featuring them several times on Steve Lamacq’s cult show.
Praises for Le soleil et la mer This couple’s sleepwalking pop doesn’t show off to attract attention. Their songs are fragile little cocoons where you can hide to forget the world’s harshness. Minimalist but very well written, this is intimate music in which instruments, noise and (bilingual) vocals are interwoven smoothly, as it dabbles in the world of childhood dreams and games. – Libération (la découverte) (France)
Bibi Club’s subtle gift is to convey the hazy feel of being jet-lagged while still holding our attention right away. […] Le Soleil et la Mer says it all about our planetary wandering and contemplative passion. If you don’t fall in love with this record, it will at least stop you in your tracks. – Les Inrocks
Featuring the ecstatic, trippy voice of Adèle, this collection of mesmerizing beach pop takes us straight into an August paradise via clear turquoise melodies and romantic lyrics, without ever doubting itself.” 4/6 – Magic Magazine
Le soleil et la mer is more than an album – it’s a transformative journey. A dreamy, tender epic courtesy of Bibi Club. Enough to make you fall in love. – La Face B (France)
Highlights include L’Oiseau rouge, which somehow reminds of Cocteau Twins; Le matin and Femme-Lady sounds as much like the dreamy pop of Beach House as the noise-pop of Deerhunter; and kudos for the gloriously daring experiment that is Bellini. ★★★★ – Le Canal Auditif
Bibi Club is about the current moment, objects, nature, everything surrounding us. A way to forget about the daily grind? More like an invitation to let things go, without trying to control them. Going with the flow, basically, which is what the album feels like. Particularly on Femme-Lady, a feverish rock track with new wave bass, groovy synths, and nervy guitar licks by Nicolas Basque. ★★★1/2 – La Presse
The first band to play the whole festival was recent Exclaim! New Faves alum Bibi Club, and they did a formidable job of inviting us in with their compelling brand of Nena-reminiscent synthpop, which sounds nonsensical and elegant in equal measure. – Exclaim!
A soothing, free-spirited, pure folk record. A gorgeous album. – Radio-Canada Culture Club
Le soleil et la mer is true to its title. Like the sun, it’s warm and bright. Like the sea, it soothes us and takes us far away. It conveys joy and love. – Journal Metro
***
The pair named themselves Bibi Club for the discotheque in their living room, where the couple’s bibis—their loved ones—come and dance. With kids at home, Nico and Adèle had to sneak away to make music: five minutes here, two hours there. Accordingly, their songs imagine that a family’s everyday enchantments might be loaned to the dancefloor, to the nighttime, to a place that’s still thumping as the day breaks. Throughout Le soleil et la mer, Adèle and Nico set out to create music that is intimate, honest, sparkling with an energy that animates even its quiet moments—and inspired by artists as diverse as Stereolab, Suicide, Alice Coltrane, and Tirzah. It’s a sound as ready for revels as it is for rainy days. Bibi Club will remind you: if it’s not sunny here, it’s sunny somewhere.
